On Friday 7th December, Tom Wilson attended the launch of a report The Importance of Narrative in Responding to Hate Incidents Following “Trigger” Events. The report was jointly produced by the Community and Criminal Justice Divison of DeMontfort University, together with their Global Peace ad Transitional Justice Research Group and the organisation Tell MAMA. The report focused on the aftermath of the terror attack on Westminster Bridge on 22nd March 2017, analysing social and mainstream media responses and making recommendations for how to minimise the possibility of a spike in hate incidents after such “trigger” events. There was a sobering reminder of the ease with which misinformation, hatred and bigotry and spread on-line and the importance of civicl society activists and local community groups taking a stand, moving from being by-standers to up-standers who challenge hatred and prejudice in all its forms.
