Focus On… Buddhism

We continued our series for local Christians on different faiths with a session on Buddhism last Thursday. After meeting at the Centre for a brief overview of Buddhist traditions, we departed for East Midlands Buddhist Vihara. We were welcomed there by a Buddhist practitioner, Tony Fletcher, who gave us a fascinating talk on the communities that use the Vihara and also how meditation is practised in this particular tradition (Theravadin).

On our return to the St Philip’s Centre, we watched a short video clip by Laurence Freeman OSB on the use of mantras in Christian meditation, as advocated by the World Christian Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM). This led us into an interesting discussion around the significance of contemplation and meditation in both Buddhist and Christian traditions; where the similarities lie but also where the differences are. Some of those in the group were kind enough to share their own experiences of meditation, and, coupled with Tony’s openness to sharing with us, really allowed us to enter into meaningful conversation about the use of meditation in everyday life.
