The Department for Communities and Local Government is refreshing the Faith Leaders Declaration that condemns the practice of Female Genital Mutilation. The original declaration states that "Female Genital Mutilation, in all its types is a grave violation of the rights of girls and women. It is a form of child abuse and a violation of a child’s bodily integrity as well as their right to health. It can have serious consequences for a woman’s health and in some instances can lead to death. It is not a religious requirement. Causing harm and distress is not condoned by our faith.” DCLG are asking for suggestions as to any possible amendments to the declaration and consulting about adding an extra sentence that explains FGM is illegal in the UK. They also want views as to how best spread the message that FGM is not tolerated in the UK.
