Exploring Diwali from a Hindu, Jain and Sikh perspective Earlier on this year, three of our faith practitioners approached us with an idea about leading a session for adult Christians on Diwali. Whilst most people associate Diwali with Hinduism, it is perhaps less well known that Sikhs and Jains also celebrate Diwali; the idea behind the session was therefore to teach people about why and how different faith groups celebrate Diwali. Our first session was for Evington Churches Together, kindly hosted by St Denys Church. Tom had also arranged for a film to be produced of the session that evening, which you can view above. We then followed this session up with a further two, one at Leicester Cathedral and one for a fellowship group at South Wigston Methodist Church. Overall all the sessions went very well, with lots of interest, good questions from the floor and delight at the food and hospitality on offer. A lot of planning and preparation went into the launch of these sessions, and a big thank you must go to Ramila Chauhan, Surinder Kaur Sandhu and Smita Shah for all the effort they put in to making this new session a success. In keeping with the festival calendar, we would like to run these sessions close to Diwali again next year – if your church would be interested in an ‘Understanding Diwali’ session, please do get in touch with Laura.
